Any standard USB MIDI keyboard works. You don't need anything expensive.
Ultra-portable. Good for travel and beginners. Range can feel limited for longer ragas.
Best balance of portability and playability. Fits comfortably on a table or lap.
Full range, best for advanced players and fixed home setups. Less portable.
Tip: Look for keyboards with extra keys extended on the lower side — they give more low-range notes, which suits harmonium playing style.
Use a USB-C OTG adapter (₹150–₹300) + the keyboard's USB cable. Most Android phones support USB OTG natively.
Use a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter or USB-C to USB-A adapter (for newer iPads).
Get a USB-C hub with 3.5mm audio out + USB port + PD charging. This lets you connect the MIDI keyboard, plug in speakers, and keep the phone charged — all at once. Search: "USB-C hub audio jack India"
Plug your keyboard into the USB-C OTG adapter, then into your phone. Your phone will detect it automatically — no drivers needed.
Launch Jalra. The app will automatically detect the connected MIDI keyboard and show its status on screen.
Tap the settings button (⚙️) next to the pitch selector. In the MIDI Harmonium settings, make sure "Enable Harmonium" is checked. Adjust volume to your liking.
Press any key and hear the harmonium. Use your phone's volume buttons or the in-app slider to balance harmonium volume with mridangam and tambura.
Connect wired speakers or headphones rather than Bluetooth — wired has much lower latency, which matters for real-time playing. Use the tambura alongside harmonium for proper shruti practice.
Real harmonium samples — not a synth patch. Preserves the natural reed character musicians expect.
Play harder for louder notes, softer for quieter — just like a real harmonium with bellows control.
Layered octave reeds for a fuller, richer harmonium tone preferred by devotional musicians.
Add hall or room reverb to simulate different acoustic spaces — ideal for satsang or practice rooms.
Play harmonium and mridangam simultaneously. All talas supported. No second device needed.
Built-in tambura for continuous shruti reference while playing harmonium — all pitches.
Core harmonium and MIDI functionality works fully offline. No internet required during practice.
Available on both Android and iPhone/iPad. Same harmonium workflow across all your devices.
Affordable first harmonium. Practice at home, hostel, or while travelling. No ₹25,000 investment before you're sure you'll continue.
Flights, hotels, train journeys. 37-key keyboard fits in a laptop bag. No check-in baggage needed.
Temple visits, satsang gatherings, nama sankeertanam. Quick to set up, easy to carry, runs on phone battery.
Zoom and online class setup. No microphone pickup issues from keyboard noise. Clean, portable studio.
No. Jalra uses dedicated harmonium samples recorded from a real instrument — not a synthesized keyboard patch. The triple reed mode and reverb further enhance the natural harmonium character. It will not sound identical to a high-end physical harmonium, but for practice, bhajans, and devotional use, most musicians find it very satisfying.
For practice, students, bhajan groups, and travelling musicians — yes, absolutely. Professional stage performers who need the most refined sound and feel may still prefer dedicated hardware. But for the vast majority of day-to-day use cases, Jalra + MIDI keyboard is a compelling, much more affordable option that also gives you mridangam and tambura built in.
In most cases, yes. Jalra works with standard USB MIDI keyboards. Plug it in via USB OTG on Android or a Lightning/USB-C adapter on iOS and it should be detected automatically.
Bluetooth MIDI is supported. Keyboards like the Korg microKEY Air work well. For lowest latency, wired USB is recommended — but Bluetooth is quite usable for practice.
Jalra uses Oboe (Android's low-latency audio engine) for real-time performance. On modern phones the latency is very low and comfortable for live playing. For best results: use wired audio output, close background apps, and keep battery above 20%.
Yes. Jalra is available on both Android and iOS (App Store). Connect a MIDI keyboard using a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter or USB-C adapter depending on your device.
Yes. The harmonium and MIDI functionality is fully local — no internet connection needed during practice or performance.
