🛒 What You Need

1. A MIDI Keyboard

Any standard USB MIDI keyboard works. You don't need anything expensive.

🎯 Which size should you get?

25 Keys

Ultra-portable. Good for travel and beginners. Range can feel limited for longer ragas.

37 Keys Best

Best balance of portability and playability. Fits comfortably on a table or lap.

49–61 Keys

Full range, best for advanced players and fixed home setups. Less portable.

Tip: Look for keyboards with extra keys extended on the lower side — they give more low-range notes, which suits harmonium playing style.

2. Connection Cable / Adapter

Android (USB-C phone)

Use a USB-C OTG adapter (₹150–₹300) + the keyboard's USB cable. Most Android phones support USB OTG natively.

iOS (iPhone / iPad)

Use a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter or USB-C to USB-A adapter (for newer iPads).

3. Audio Output (Optional but Recommended)

📱 Phone with no 3.5mm headphone jack?

Get a USB-C hub with 3.5mm audio out + USB port + PD charging. This lets you connect the MIDI keyboard, plug in speakers, and keep the phone charged — all at once. Search: "USB-C hub audio jack India"

🚀 Setup in 4 Steps

1

Connect the MIDI keyboard to your phone

Plug your keyboard into the USB-C OTG adapter, then into your phone. Your phone will detect it automatically — no drivers needed.

2

Open Jalra App

Launch Jalra. The app will automatically detect the connected MIDI keyboard and show its status on screen.

3

Enable MIDI Harmonium

Tap the settings button (⚙️) next to the pitch selector. In the MIDI Harmonium settings, make sure "Enable Harmonium" is checked. Adjust volume to your liking.

4

Play!

Press any key and hear the harmonium. Use your phone's volume buttons or the in-app slider to balance harmonium volume with mridangam and tambura.

💡 Pro tip for best sound

Connect wired speakers or headphones rather than Bluetooth — wired has much lower latency, which matters for real-time playing. Use the tambura alongside harmonium for proper shruti practice.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does Jalra sound like a generic synth keyboard?

No. Jalra uses dedicated harmonium samples recorded from a real instrument — not a synthesized keyboard patch. The triple reed mode and reverb further enhance the natural harmonium character. It will not sound identical to a high-end physical harmonium, but for practice, bhajans, and devotional use, most musicians find it very satisfying.

Can Jalra replace a dedicated digital harmonium (like Radel Maadhurium)?

For practice, students, bhajan groups, and travelling musicians — yes, absolutely. Professional stage performers who need the most refined sound and feel may still prefer dedicated hardware. But for the vast majority of day-to-day use cases, Jalra + MIDI keyboard is a compelling, much more affordable option that also gives you mridangam and tambura built in.

Will my existing MIDI keyboard work?

In most cases, yes. Jalra works with standard USB MIDI keyboards. Plug it in via USB OTG on Android or a Lightning/USB-C adapter on iOS and it should be detected automatically.

What about Bluetooth MIDI keyboards?

Bluetooth MIDI is supported. Keyboards like the Korg microKEY Air work well. For lowest latency, wired USB is recommended — but Bluetooth is quite usable for practice.

Is there any latency / delay when playing?

Jalra uses Oboe (Android's low-latency audio engine) for real-time performance. On modern phones the latency is very low and comfortable for live playing. For best results: use wired audio output, close background apps, and keep battery above 20%.

Can I use it on iPhone?

Yes. Jalra is available on both Android and iOS (App Store). Connect a MIDI keyboard using a Lightning to USB Camera Adapter or USB-C adapter depending on your device.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. The harmonium and MIDI functionality is fully local — no internet connection needed during practice or performance.

🔧 Troubleshooting

MIDI keyboard not detected

  • Unplug and reconnect the keyboard
  • Make sure your OTG adapter supports USB Host mode
  • Restart the Jalra app
  • Try a different USB cable
  • On Android, check if the system asks for USB permission — tap "Allow"

No sound from harmonium

  • Check that "Enable Harmonium" is turned ON in the MIDI settings
  • Increase phone volume and in-app harmonium volume
  • Make sure speakers or headphones are properly connected

Sound feels delayed or laggy

  • Use wired speakers/headphones instead of Bluetooth
  • Close other apps running in the background
  • Reduce reverb settings if reverb is on
  • Disable Triple Reed if enabled — it reduces processing load
  • Charge your phone — low battery can throttle audio performance
